A few years back I was at a yard sale doing what I do best, searching for cool and unique stuff. While at one of the many yard sales I had been shopping at that day, I overheard the woman having this particular yard sale mention “rabbits”. Well, what do you know, my daughter had been asking for a warm furry creature for some time now. So I casually asked the purveyor of this yard sale “how much”? She looked at me and said they just need a good home. I told her about my daughter and how our family are huge animal lovers, 4 Dogs, 2 birds, 3 cats, 2 guinea pigs, and 2 fish, she took me over to them and said there yours and gave me the rabbits and to top it off a nice rabbit pen to keep them cozy and safe. I hurried to get them and the pen into my car before she changed her mind.
When I arrived back home I thought everyone would be surprised but they were all gone. So I set up the pen and waited for the rest of the family to get home. Now, as I am sure you can imagine, it is very hard not to fall in love with a rabbit and I was right, when the kids arrived home they could not stop holding the warm, furry creatures. In just a few short minutes they had named their rabbits, so now we have Morgan Freeman and Puck. I am sorry to say but 6 months later we went on vacation and while we were away Puck somehow, and we are still not sure how went missing. Fast forward three years later we still have good old Morgan Freeman.
Well, a few months back I had noticed that good old “Morgan Freeman’s” pen was really starting to look pretty shabby and not in a good shabby chic way, no more like slum lord dwelling way. I decided that I needed to upgrade his dwelling and I started to look on craigslist and yard sales for a replacement pen for Morgan Freeman. If you have ever looked for a rabbit pen you know that everything I was seeing was similar to the shabby, dilapidated one he was already residing in, and they were not cheap either.
As I am sure you are aware, I am “the Secondhand Answer Man” and if you know anything about me you know that whatever I buy must be a good deal or I will not buy it.
While yard sailing one day I had found one on a curb and picked it up for free
(Yes I asked the homeowner prior to taking it) but it just wasn’t big enough. After about 2 months of hunting the internet and scouring yard sales for a good deal, I was coming up short and really coming to the reality that I was just not going to get a pen that met my frugal criteria and that Morgan Freeman’s pen was just going to have to get a new paint job. A few days after me coming to that reality my friends Ian and Alicia of OurUrbanFarm.com sent me a text message letting me know they were having a yard sale on the upcoming Saturday. I said to myself “its a yard sale, of course, I will stop by and see what I could score”. Guess what, nope your wrong they don’t have rabbits nor did they have a rabbit pen but while I as power shopping at there yard sale, Ian said: “Joe don’t you have a rabbit”? I said “YES I DO” in a perked up fashion. Ian turned and introduced me to two young ladies that were also shopping at the yard sale. Ian said that they were his neighbors and they resided in the house that backed his home. The two young ladies said they have a rabbit but he does not like his pen and they are looking to get rid of it. They asked, “are you interested”. I said I am looking for one. So they said come on over and take a look. A few minutes later I was in my SUV driving around the block to there beautiful home. They so kindly walked me around to the side of the house where the rabbit pen was and to my utter surprise there it stood, it was what I now like to call ” The Taj Mahal”. I said I would love to have it. The ladies helped me carry it in two parts over to my car. I had to rearrange everything in the car as I had been yard selling and had to make room for this huge pen. I could not get it in the car fast enough, I was worried that they might see how excited I was and change there mind. Now after all is said and done, let me tell you the best part of the whole thing, It was FREE!
Morgan Freeman is loving his new digs and we are even thinking of getting him a roommate.
It just goes to show you that if you put it out to the universe, the universe will work for you. They call that the SECRET.
A Secondhand Answer Man Golden Nugget Tip:
Since you have read this far let me give you a great tip to make sure that what you are looking for is really what you desire or even need:
Most of you by now are familiar or at least have heard of the minimalist movement. If so then you have heard of Leo Babauta, If not you have got to check him out. He is the “God Father of Minimalism”. In a blog post he wrote called “Monitor Your Impulse Spending Urges” he has a method you should put to use. He says “Keep a 30-day list”. He says put what you want/desire put it on a 30-day list. Just write it down, if at the end of the 30 days you still desire that item, then get it. In most cases, you will find that you really didn’t need it in the first place or that you really didn’t want it as bad as you thought you did. If you follow this method I believe you will be extremely surprised how well it will keep you from overspending or at least wasting your valuable time and money on something you really didn’t need in the first place. On a side note, people have told me that at the end of the 30 days the item they desired just happen to fall in there laps.
