Well, it finally happened. I hit the JACKPOT! You see, one of my co-workers had mentioned that a few of her neighbors were planning to have a block sale. She knew of my addiction to yard sales and thrift stores and she thought I might like to come and check it out. So… that Sunday morning I geared up with a light tee shirt and my most comfortable walking shoes (which were both purchased at a thrift store) and headed to her neck of the woods. When I pulled up I knew I had hit the jackpot! It was the big one, the cornucopia of yard sales, and I felt like I had won the lottery. There must have been 10 houses on her block participating. Now I know that some of you reading this are saying to yourself “10 yard sales, that’s not a big deal”, and you are right, but when I turned the corner of the block it dawned on me that it wasn’t just her block that was having a block sale, it was 4-5 blocks in both directions.
I thought I had died and gone to heaven or at least my version of heaven. At one of the sales, while I was rummaging through some boxes a young lady approached me and handed me a flyer, just like one of these.
To my astonishment, it listed 41 address’ in the few blocks that were participating in this MEGA event. It also had a map to help guide me through this maze. As I used my now guided map I had noticed that a few of the houses that were having sales were not on the flyer, so some families had decided at the last minute to participate and didn’t make the cut off time to get listed on the flyer. My calculations would say that there were more like 56 homes selling their no-longer, personally treasured wares. To me, it was like fresh baked cookies filling the air. Then BAM, it happened, my time was up and with utter disappointment I had to trudge back to my car for the second time and unloaded the treasures that I had purchased that day. I climbed into the driver’s seat and with a tinge of jealousy and a tear in my eye, while watching others sift through what should be mine, I slowly pulled away from the curb and headed out. You do understand that family comes first and of course, child services would be wondering why I hadn’t picked up my daughter from her dance class and my wife would have been livid. Well, as they say, “all good things must come to an end”.
